On March 20th, the 2025 International Forum on Industry–Education–Research Integrated Development was held in Jinan. At the parallel event, the stunning “Civilization Dialogue Between the Yellow River and the Nile“ photography exhibition, the ripples of China's Yellow River are dancing with the waves of Africa's Nile through these captivating images. Although these two mother rivers have never met physically, today they're waltzing across time and space through the lens magic of Chinese and African photographers.
Symphony of Two Rivers: A Visual Ode to Cultural Exchange
At the Jinan Exhibition Center of the Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique (located within the Shandong University of Art & Design), the exhibition “CivilizationDialogue between The Yellow River andthe Nile - Exhibition of Photography Art Works of China and Africa“ showcases the rich histories, landscapes, and cultures along these two iconic rivers. Through a diverse array of photographs, the exhibition captures the essence of the regions influenced by the China’s Yellow River and the Africa’s Nile. On display, the morning light on the Nile as seen through Chinese lenses contrasts beautifully with the sunset over the Yellow River captured by African photographers. Curator Zeng Yi highlights the unique visual perspectives born from distinct cultural backgrounds, creating a fascinating chemical reaction through this “third perspective“ approach.
The Yellow River, China's cradle of civilization, flows eastward through nine provinces and regions, while the Nile, Egypt's lifeline and the world's longest river, runs north through nine African countries. This exhibition, through the lens of photography, not only captures the dialogue between these two civilizations but also builds a bridge of friendship between China and Africa, narrating a comprehensive and authentic Chinese story to the world. This vision is the heart of Professor Zeng Yi's curatorial masterpiece.
Lens Decoded: The Developer of Cultural Genes
“This photo of Egyptian children waving at a Chinese photographer perfectly captures the blend of cultural differences and human connection,“ Zeng Yi reminisced while presenting his work “Backseat“. He recalled navigating through traffic in a minibus when he noticed three children in a car ahead. Upon meeting the photographer's gaze, instead of shying away, the children responded with the characteristic warmth of Egyptians, their smiles as radiant as the morning sun, illuminating the bustling street scene outside. Zeng quickly captured this vibrant moment.
Another impactful piece in the exhibition, titled “Aspiration,“ features a close-up of an African child intently writing with a pencil. The boy's eager eyes, filled with a thirst for knowledge and learning, echo the famous “Big Eyes“ photograph by Xie Hailong, bridging time and space. “Education can change destinies and transform a nation,“ Zeng expressed, hoping for more opportunities to contribute to the improvement of life and education in Africa.
Integration of Industry and Education: Building a New Ecosystem for Visual Arts Education
The fusion of international industry, education, and research is a defining trend of the new era. As a bridge between academia and industry, the “Dialogue of Civilizations: The Yellow River Meets the Nile“ photography exhibition highlights the unique role of visual arts in this integration. Curator Zeng Yi, a senior professor and art museum director at Shandong University of Art & Design, explains that the university has pioneered an innovative educational path through the Jinan International Photography Biennale, a platform nurtured over nearly two decades. “The art museum serves as a second classroom, allowing students to engage with photographers and their works on campus. The Biennale provides a vital platform for teaching and learning, encouraging active student participation.“
In October 2024, Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique (FIAP) established its China (Jinan) Office, the only such global branch, to promote Chinese photography on the international stage and foster cross-cultural exchanges. As an authoritative body under UNESCO, the FIAP China Office has been exploring new avenues for grassroots visual diplomacy, creating a ripple effect through lens-mediated exchanges. Professor Zeng Yi notes, “Whether foreign photographers capturing China or Chinese photographers exhibiting abroad, these interactions foster mutual understanding. Works created from firsthand experiences, shared through media and social networks, often challenge preconceived notions through the 'outsider's perspective.'“
The dialogue between the Yellow River and the Nile, connected through the lens, builds a bridge of mutual understanding across geography and culture. In the journey toward a shared human destiny, this visual exchange of civilizations is crafting a new paradigm for cross-cultural communication.
